2023 Online Tour: Peri-feral Purlieu

Open Air Concept / Seasonal Enrichment / Safe Feral Colony

Twelve formally feral felines have found an amazing forever home in Amy and Nathan’s creative catio. They enjoy many birds and wildlife in their yard, and they realized that their cats were impacting the health of these critters by catching them and killing them. Then one day, one of their cats was killed by a coyote, and several of the feral cats went missing. They decided to protect their indoor cats and create a safer environment for the outdoor colony. The catio incorporates natural plantings including grass, a partially fenced roof combined with clear polycarbonate, and it fits the side yard dimensions while still allowing human access inside and around the structure. One corner of the catio roof is fenced instead of solid to allow for the cats to experience rain or snow, and the plants can be naturally watered.

The Catio Tour is part of the Cats Safe at Home campaign, which seeks to reduce the number of cats living outdoors in the Portland metropolitan area in a humane and environmentally responsible manner. We believe that every cat deserves a safe home where they are loved, cared for, and kept free from hazards. The Catio Tour was created to offer inspiration for those looking for ways for their cats to have safe outdoor time. We hope you enjoy this year’s Catio Tour!
